I write a toy car navigation app for Android, mostly for Android SDKs
While testing my application, it worked fine for a few hours. Then, suddenly, I reported my position to be 100 km south of my actual location, which was traveling 300 km / hr. I was actually traveling about 120 km / hour.
I have changed the application in Google Maps, and this also showed the same wrong position and estimated velocity as I was driving the car at high speed with high speed, for security, I decided that the phone Do not start with any kind, and keep it away. The next time I took it (maybe 15 minutes later), the situation and speed were again correct.
I will add diagnostics to my program to show the accuracy of the GPS fix report.
I have a few questions:
- Is this a hardware / firmware problem in Android phone? (I have an HTC Hero)
- Is this a known failure mode of the GPS receiver?
- Can the GPS receiver report such incorrect status reports?
- Did I have another GPS receiver (a Garmin car navigator) in the car? Has this receiver differentiated with the HTC Hero unit?
Handheld GPS devices are usually less accurate than claimed , But is being blocked by 100 km (or between the distance between Bolton and Madrid), it is very unusual unusual. It seems that some weird things may be briefly with the GPS system.
Due to the other GPS receiver in your car this does not happen - the device's antenna receives just the signal, it does not broadcast anything.
Update: The article may laugh with the fact that they will produce errors in the range of 30 meters; This is ridiculous because the GPS device is less than normal conditions.
